Statement
of Purpose
This CORE Aesthetics/introductory drawing course provides a
variety of approaches designed to improve an individual’s skill in
drawing. Attention to line, shape,
value, texture and perspective are used to develop an understanding of what we
see in relation to how we represent it visually. This class is for non-art majors.
Course
Objectives
Students will recognize drawing as essentially a product of
intense observation and visual acuteness, develop skills of the hand already
inherent in much of human activity, and utilize disciplined approaches and
exercises in learning to understand and analyze what we see. Students will acquire experience and skill in
the use of various drawing media.
Course
Content
The skills of observational drawing will be taught with an
emphasis on line, value, perspective, analysis of form and personal expressive
content. Students will experience a
variety of drawing media.
Instructional
Approach
The class will be comprised of in-class and out-of-class
assignments each emphasizing new skills or approaches for making drawings and
understanding the three-dimensional world.
Additionally, students may be looking at the drawings of master artists,
and analyzing their own work and the work of their peers. Some reflective writing may be assigned. The instructor will give one on one-advice as
well as group comments. Note taking is
encouraged.
Student Responsibilities
- Attend class regularly. There will
be many in-class assignments and missing just one day could set you
behind. An excess of three absences will
result in your grade being lowered one third a letter grade for each absence
over three. Please consult me if
extenuating circumstances exist. Three
times tardy to class or leaving early from class is counted as an absence. Missing class because you haven’t finished an
assignment is a questionable choice and results in both a lower grade on the
assignment and the loss of valuable class time.
- Come to class prepared.
- Turn your work in on time. (late
assignments will result in your grade being lowered a half grade for each day
late.)
- Work hard to master new skills, be open to new approaches and accept
criticism as part of the drawing process.
- Challenge yourself each day to improve from your previous day’s work (successful artists maintain
a dialogue with themselves that is both self critical and self motivating)
-
Attend all Coburn Gallery
opening receptions.
-
Retain all your work for
final critiques.
-
Keep your work area clean.
Evaluation Criteria
Grades
are based on a combination of the following:
- Completion and Quality of
in-class and out-of-class assignments
- Overall Improvement of
drawing quality
- Demonstration of
understanding of theory and drawing concepts
- Consistency in your effort
and drawings
- Attendance
If you consistently forget to clean
up your work area or come in to class unprepared your grade will be affected.
Plagiarism is any work not found to
be by the student but handed in as such.
The appropriate disciplinary action will be taken if a student commits
plagiarism.
